Contractors

Contractor work that includes changes to the exterior of your home (including landscaping) requires submission and approval of an ARC Exterior Modification Application prior to commencement of all work. 

All residents are encouraged to follow good consumer protection procedures when contracting with any company or vendor: 

• Research consumer periodicals (such as Washington Consumer Checkbook)
• Obtain multiple bids
• Obtain references or referrals from previous customers
• Insist on a written fixed price contract to include the name and address of the contractor, the license number, terms of payment, start and completion dates, description of the work products and services, warranty limitations, and insurance coverage, etc.
• Check the contractor's complaint record with the local Consumer Protection Division or Better Business Bureau (www.fairfaxcounty.gov/consumer.htm)
• Verify that the contractor has the required local and/or state contractor's license; contact the Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services, Licensing Section, at 703-324-1540, and the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation, Licensing Section, at 804-367-8511; more information at: www.fairfaxcounty.gov/dpwes/navbar/faqs/contractorlic.htm
• Check the need for a building permit (the contractor must obtain the permit in his/her name to assure that the contractor -- not the homeowner -- is liable for any building code violations – call the Permit Application Center at 703-222-0801 for more information)
• Carefully read and agree with all contract terms before signing.
